Retargeting: Continue a Conversation Without Repeating Yourself
CHC GROWTH INSIGHTS · PRACTICAL GUIDES
In this guide
Think about retargeting as a relevant follow-up to customer interest, with messages that answer questions instead of repeating the same pitch.
Someone who explored your service may need a different message from someone discovering your business for the first time. Retargeting is one way advertisers can continue that conversation where platform capabilities and audience permissions allow.
Identify the unanswered question
A visitor may understand what you sell but still wonder how the process works, whether it suits their situation, or what happens after they inquire. Repeating the original headline may not resolve that hesitation.
Plan content that addresses a real buying question. A process explanation, accurate demonstration, or useful comparison can provide new information. Avoid writing as though you personally know why an individual did not purchase.
Match the message to the next step
For an illustrative service business, a follow-up ad could explain what is included in an estimate visit. For a store, it could clarify product sizing or compatibility. Both messages help someone evaluate the offer rather than manufacture pressure.
Use audience exclusions where appropriate and supported, including people who already completed the intended action. Review repetition so that a small audience is not overwhelmed by the same creative.
Keep measurement in context
A returning customer may have encountered your business through several channels. A reported retargeting conversion does not automatically prove that the customer would never have purchased without that ad.
Review the full campaign mix, not just the channel with the most flattering report. Start with accurate measurement and explain any uncertainty about the contribution of each interaction.
Good follow-up adds useful information. Before launching a retargeting message, ask what the viewer learns that they did not learn the first time.
